WEST EATON PLACE

Client: Private individual

The address says it all. Set in the most prestigious square kilometre in the capital, we were given the opportunity to indulge and explore our imagination. Our client asked us to turn this tired, 4th-floor property in Belgravia into something quite special – and in turn increase its value. We talked about the items that our client simply must have, and what he saw as the finished article in terms of space planning, and then we got to work!

Firstly we worked on two concepts giving two very different budgets. Gladly, our client trusted our advice and expertise and went for the higher of the two, allowing us complete artistic licence. We took down all of the existing walls and started with a blank canvas. It was very obvious that the living, cooking and dining areas had to share the same space, so our theme for this "london look" was retro chic.

We started with the kitchen, which was designed with minimalist impact. We made it from bespoke high-gloss cabinetry using all flush appliances, including an extraction unit which appeared out of the worktop at the push of a button. Details such as making the sink out of the same stone as the worktop and returning the stone worktop to the floor helped the success of this space. In fact, small details were the key to success throughout the apartment as I hope the images show. Technology was also a big part of the installation integrating, audio, visual and internet services throughout every room. All of the fitted furniture was designed and produced by LHD. All of the lighting is controlled remotely via dimmer switching modules located out of the way, and we have even included cooling compartments in the bedrooms just in case. Lighting is always a massive consideration to all of LHD's installations but here we have really surpassed ourselves. The use of LED lighting throughout is key, the apartment is now much more versatile and useable.

One of the successes of the project was using the same American walnut flooring throughout giving cohesion and a wonderful flow. The bathrooms are just fabulous, using Grade A marble and mosaics. One is an out-and-out wet room which was achieved by lowering the floors in this area and then building back with a water-proofing system, and keeping the finished floor level with the adjoining room. Probably the single most significant item of this project is the installation of air cooling and heating. It is very rare to find an apartment in Central London with a full air-conditioning installation. But we achieved it…
